LA MAPPA DEL DESTINO di Glenn Cooper, edizioni Nord, pp.410 (2011)

Un giallo che si intrica e si dipana tra archeologia e indagini di laboratorio. Al centro c’è di nuovo un libro, come per i precedenti romanzi dello scrittore, La Biblioteca dei Morti e Il Libro delle Anime. Un libro dalla rilegatura preziosa e curata, di fattura medievale, un libro da non leggere e che terrà stretto il lettore alle pagine del nuovo capolavoro di Glenn Cooper finché non sarà giunto ai ringraziamenti. E’ qui che si manifesta l’animo di Cooper, uomo che crede nei sogni e li mette in pratica, che tributa i meriti del suo successo a collaboratori, amici, archeologi, come lui, finanche a una psichiatra che lo aiutato a dare più carattere ai suoi personaggi, alle sue editor, al suo agente e, infine, alla moglie Tessa, pilastro portante della sua vita.

Ma la storia di La Mappa del Destino , presentato in Italia nel 2011, parte da una scoperta, che ha a che fare con la terra e che lega un mondo antico a quello odierno in una serie di flashback temporali, caratteristica dei romanzi di Cooper. Il luogo, il Pèrigord francese. Tutto ha inizio nell’abbazia benedettina dove i frati sono sorpresi nella notte da un incendio nella biblioteca.  Lo stile è ancora lineare, incalzante e sempre esplicito e riesce sempre a descrivere i personaggi concentrandosi sui loro movimenti e i loro pensieri, ripetendo al lettore informazioni utili a non farlo sentire  solo nella comprensione della vicenda. Anche quando il linguaggio diventa più scientifico, Cooper fa in modo che le cose vengano spiegate, accompagnando con compiacimento il lettore a giungere, insieme all’investigatore, alla soluzione del caso.

L’uomo, che sa di attrarre e che si barcamena tra una conquista e l’altra, anche in questo caso è il protagonista. Luc Simard, archeologo francese di fama, alle spalle una bella carriera professionale e tante storie sentimentali, ma una sola di valore, cui ha voltato le spalle. Per paura? Così, nello svolgersi del racconto, anche Luc cercherà se stesso mentre correrà dietro alla risoluzione del mistero che incombe sul villaggio di Ruac.

MYSTERY AND HISTORY IN THE LAST ABSORBING GLENN COOPER’S WORK

A thriller novel that get tangled up and get sorted out between archaeology and lab’s investigations .

At the core there is a book again, as in the precedent  writer’s works  “Library of the Dead” and “ Book of souls” . A book with a precious and tidy binding, coming from  Middle Age , a book that in not supposed to be read and that keep the reader tight to the  pages of the new  Glenn Cooper’s masterpiece  since he has to read the acknowledgements .  Is here that the soul of Glenn Cooper in showed, man that believes in dreams and puts  them in practice, that rends honor to his partners , friends, archaeologists like him even to a psychiatrist that helped him to give more personality  to his characters, that rends honor to his editors, to his manager and in the end to his wife Tessa , supporting pillar of his life.

But the story of the tenth Chamber , introduced in Italy in 2011, starts with a discovery , that  is involved with the earth and that binds an ancient world to a current world with a series of temporal flashbacks, distinctive feature of Cooper’s novels.

The place, the French Pèrigord. The story starts in a Benedictine abbey  where the monks are surprised  by a blaze in the library .

The style is still linear , persisting and always explicit and describes the characters concentrating  the narration on their movements and their  thoughts , repeating information to the reader  useful for not make them alone in the understanding of the events.

Even when the language became more scientific, Cooper  explain some way all the  things , accompanying complaisantly  the reader  to resolve , along with the detective, the case.

The man, that knows of being attractive and collects different conquests , even in this case is the main character . Luc Simard is a French famous archaeologist , with a brilliant professional career and many affairs on his back , only one important for him that he has thrown away . For fear?  So, in the development of the story , also Luc will look for himself  while he will follow the resolution to the mystery that hangs on the Ruac  village.
